I am a writer, photographer and illustrator with a special interest in plants and gardens.
When I left school I first set out to study art and photography but became hopelessly distracted when I was given a book on the traditional uses of plants. I put my camera and sketchbook aside and instead enrolled on a course studying the history and uses of herbs. An apprenticeship followed, then an honours course in Horticulture and Design. Later, in the UK, I worked for a national garden centre group and later still, independently, as a garden consultant, all the while planting and developing my own small corner of the world.

I began writing in earnest when I was asked to edit a book on gardening and ended up contributing to it as well. I followed that up by writing a further three books and numerous articles for magazines and newspapers. I am the first to admit that I am lucky. I spend my working day looking into subjects which intrigue me and when the sun shines or the light is right I grab my camera and sketchbook and go out hunting for subjects to photograph and draw.
The thing I love about gardens and gardening is that there is always something to discover; something new or beautiful or curious. It is passing on these little fascinations that makes writing about gardening such a very great pleasure.
