How to Make Woodpecker Goo

Woodpecker Goo is a lovely sticky, buggy stew that is perfect for woodpeckers and other birds that feed on insects.  Some birds like to feed off bird tables and others like to feed off the ground, but others are happier if they can perch on a vertical surface that makes them feel like they are on a tree trunk.

You will need:

  • An old bit of wood, about 10 cm wide and 20 cm long

  • A hand drill or an adult with an electric drill and a thick drill bit

  • A large hook, like a cup hook

  • Some wire or string to hang the feeder on a tree

  • A cup of dried suet and

  • A cup of peanut butter

  • A cup of dried mealworms

Method:

  1. Mix up the suet, meal worms and peanut butter in a bowl and set aside.

  2. Drill 10 holes on the sides and edges of the log

  3. Screw the cup hook into the top of the wood and attach the wire or string to the hook

  4. Push your woodpecker goo into all the holes

  5. Hang your feeder on a tree, close to the trunk and keep a lookout for woodpeckers and other birds that feed on insects such as treecreepers, bluetits, starlings and magpies.
